Sir Ian Bauckham CBE

Sir Ian took over the role of Chief Regulator in January 2024. Before that, he had served as Chair of the Board of Ofqual from January 2021 and had been a Board member from March 2018. Before becoming Chief Regulator, Sir Ian led a multi-academy trust.

Sir Ian is Chair of Oak National Academy, an arm’s length body of the DfE.

We have issued the first Chief Regulator's Rebuke – a new enforcement tool introduced last October as part of a significant update to Ofqual's Supporting Compliance and Taking Regulatory Action policy. The rebuke has been issued to WJEC, following serious failings involving 4 of its Eduqas GCSE, AS and A level qualifications between 2019 and 2025.
